Apple Basics

Apples are a good source of potassium and a particular type of fiber called pectin. They carry only small amounts of vitamin C. I like Granny smith and Golden delicious for both cooking and eating. You will also love Cortland, Granny Smith, Rome Beauty, Northern Spys and Winesaps when cooked. Delicious, McIntosh and Pink Lady’s are delicious eaten raw .
When you have bruises on an apple eat around the bruise or when cooking with apples cut that part out it will have no effect on the overall quality once cooked.

Cooking Instructions

Apples start to brown as soon as peeled or cut and exposed to the air, this is normal. To prevent browning cook right away or put into a lemon bath of 1 cup cold water mixed with 1 teaspoon lemon juice. Apples keep 2 to 4 weeks in the refrigerator.
Use apples to make Free Form Fruit Tart, Fresh Fruit Cake, Apple Crisp, Baked Apple, Fruit Cobbler, or Apple Cake. All recipes are listed in the recipe index.
