Most abundant in the spring but now grown year-round, look for organic. Avoid berries with large uncolored areas as they are likely to be flavorless, and check the package for mold, particularly towards the bottom of the package as it can spread quickly. Instead of buying flavorless strawberries out of season, try frozen unsweetened berries; these are not as good as fresh, but they can be added to muffins and pancakes and used to make fruit smoothies quite deliciously.
